A Beginner's Guide To Leveling Up: A Graphic Novel

Description

TRON meets sixth grade in this heartfelt and fantastical graphic novel where a pixelated quest helps one girl navigate grief, friendship, and the wilds of middle school. Sixth grade. The game just got real. For Lexie, this year was supposed to be all about joining clubs, claiming the perfect lunch spot, and gaming after school with her best friends. But shifting friendships and the grief of losing her beloved grandfather make middle school feel more like someone switched her life to hard mode. Then Lexie discovers a mysterious journal tucked inside her grandfather’s things. It’s filled with cryptic notes and cheat codes from an unfinished video game he was creating: Warrior’s Quest . When Lexie and her older sister, Eunice, are suddenly transported into the game’s pixelated world, the line between reality and fantasy starts to blur. Can Lexie and her sister level up and face the monsters in the game—and in real life—or is it game over for good?

Feeling Like An Adhd Alien: A Graphic Novel

Creative Team

Pina Varnel (artist)

Description

Candid, comforting, and practical, this graphic novel is an endearing portrayal of the ups and downs of living with ADHD. Kiki has always felt different from other people: She loses track of time, she daydreams when she should be paying attention, she questions all the rules and shows her emotions more strongly than her friends. But through trial and error (and error and error), she discovers her own ways to succeed and to connect with her loved ones. And eventually, she discovers a truth that makes all the difference—that she has been living with undiagnosed ADHD. Now, Kiki can get real help in managing her disorder and a new understanding of why she has been feeling more like an alien than a typical high school student. Through disarmingly honest fictional anecdotes and enlightening interludes that explain the specifics of ADHD, Pina Varnel shares her own life experiences and hard-won knowledge.

Description

A middle grade graphic novel debut by a New Yorker cartoonist following two best friends who share a passion for DIY filmmaking until the move to middle school sparks growing differences between them. Best friends Ami and Ivy couldn’t be more different: Ami is quiet and loves to daydream, while Ivy is loud and in constant motion. What they do share is a love of filmmaking, and spending their free time working on a sci-fi epic about a space mission following Earth’s destruction by a giant asteroid. But lately the girls are faced with something even scarier than asteroids: sixth grade . At their new school, students are divided into different teams that might as well be different planets, and Ami and Ivy get separated. Ivy quickly finds new friends, while Ami struggles to adapt, and is too embarrassed to tell Ivy how alone she feels. When the sixth grade talent show is announced, Ami is certain entering their film will show everyone how cool they are. The only problem? Ivy says she doesn't want anyone to see it. But Ami is sure everyone will love Ivy's over-the-top performance, and then everything will turn around for Ami socially. What could possibly go wrong? This hilarious and bittersweet graphic novel, punctuated with storyboard excerpts from the girls’ film project, boldly explores the complicated but wondrous galaxies of friendship, artmaking, and growing up.

Mexikid Dreams: A Graphic Memoir

Creative Team

Pedro Martín (artist)

Description

In this extraordinary graphic memoir companion to Newbery Honor winner Mexikid , hilarious family hijinks, immigration patrols, and musical daydreams shape a year of growth and change for a Mexican-American boy and his family. Pedro Martín is sick of strawberries. Since he was seven, he’s spent every weekend and summer picking berries with his family under the hot sun. Sometimes it’s not so bad—Pedro’s an ace at “strawberry wars” with his siblings, and when a good song comes on the radio, the fields can come alive with music. But mostly, Pedro wishes he could just stay home watching Saturday cartoons, head to the beach like other kids, and not worry about immigration patrols. When his older brother gets a job away from the farm, freedom suddenly seems within arm’s reach: Pedro just has to prove to his dad that he’s ready to follow a different path! Maybe he can be a trombone player, or a cartoonist—if that’s even a real job. But as Pedro learns more about his parents’ and abuelito’s past, and the choices they made in order to open up more choices for him, he starts to understand that freedom isn’t just about leaving the fields—it’s about knowing where you came from and having the courage to draw your own life.

Douglas Holgate (artist)

Description

The third installment of the #1 New York Times , Wall Street Journal , and USA Today bestselling apocalyptic adventure series, now in paperback with custom-designed sprayed edges! A Netflix Original series! "Terrifyingly fun! Delivers big thrills and even bigger laughs."--Jeff Kinney, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Diary of a Wimpy Kid Jack’s friends make a startling discovery: they may not be the last kids on earth, after all. This is great news for everyone… except Jack. Once they’ve found other humans, his friends won’t stick around for long! Jack’s only hope for keeping things the way they are is to prove that everything here is perfect , life is crazy fun , and nothing else could be any better. After all, they live in a mind-clobberingly cool tree fort, speed through town playing real-life Mario Kart, have a crew of monster buddies, and battle zombies on the regular. That's as good as it gets! One problem: it’s hard convincing his friends that everything is great when they’re being hunted by a monstrous Nightmare King and an ancient evil who won’t rest until Earth has been devoured. Crud! Maybe life after the monster apocalypse is more complicated than Jack thought… Told in a mixture of text and black-and-white illustration, this is the perfect series for any kid who's ever dreamed of starring in their own comic book or video game.

What Was The Trail Of Tears?

Creative Team

Dede Putra (artist)

Description

Learn about one of the worst tragedies in American history: the Indian Removal Act of 1830. From 1838 to 1839, thousands of people from the Cherokee Nation and other Indigenous tribes were forced off their homelands because the white settlers believed this land belonged to them. The journey, which became known as the Trail of Tears, took up to six months and saw the Cherokee traveling across rivers, valleys, and mountains for over eight hundred miles in bitter cold and blazing heat. They had little food or water, and many of them died along the way. By the time they made it to their destination in present-day Oklahoma, the Cherokee Nation had suffered huge losses, including cultural disruptions that led them to refer to this long and brutal march as "The Trail Where They Cried." Author Sean Teuton masterfully explains why this community was forced to relocate and recounts stories from travelers whose lives and cultures were forever changed.
