PS ARTBOOKS MAGAZINE SCREAM #1 Skywald's SCREAM #1 according to Al Hewetson’s introduction, was in response to readers’ opinions as expressed in the Bunch Of Questions survey and was first published as a black-and-white comic magazine in August 1973. If you're brave enough take a peek, we’ve got 'The Strange Painting Of Jay Crumb' a spoof on underground cartoonists Jay Lynch & Robert Crumb by Felipe de la Rosa. ‘The Comics Macabre' by Al Hewetson and Maelo Cintron featured characters based on ‘Seduction Of The Innocent’ author Fredric Wertham & Comics Code Authority president Len Darvin as well as Hewetson, Herschel Waldman & other Skywald staffers. In the story Darvin and Wertham visit the Skywald offices to complain about the horror comics, get into an argument and kill Hewetson, whereupon tiny versions of Skywald’s Heap, Frankenstein’s Monster and others come off comic pages and kill Wertham and Darvin. Hewetson sent a copy of the story to Wertham, with whom he corresponded for a number of years but, according to Hewetson, Wertham didn’t get the point. Description
GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS PRINCESS PANTHA HC VOLUME 1 Princess Pantha was a circus-performing wild animal handler, who went to Africa, in search of the legendary giant gorilla M’Gana for her act! She disappeared shortly after setting out – so Gilt-edge Gates, the owner of The National Circus hired Dane Hunter, a famous explorer to find her. After discovering her safari had been wiped out by an unknown hostile native tribe and she’d saved herself by using her ability to make an extra-loud gorilla call, which the natives mistook for the approach of M’Gana and fled. Princess Pantha had survived in the jungle for two months now, utilizing her animal skills, knowledge of jiu-jitsu and a few primitive weapons. Together Pantha and Dane remained in the jungle and continued there quest to capture the legendary giant gorilla M’Gana! Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s depicted some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once common place in American culture. One story “The Land of the Black Python” has been cited as an example of racial insensitivity, a white Princess Pantha taught black Africans to overcome racial prejudice in a near-classic example of “blame-the-victim” mentality! Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. By Alex Schomburg, Art Saaf and Ralph Mayo.

GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS THE SPIRIT HC SLIPCASE EDITION VOLUME 5 Quality Comics was an American comic book publishing company that operated from 1937 to 1956 and was largely influential in creating the 'Golden Age' of comic books. From 1940–1950, printer Everett M. "Busy" Arnold reprinted Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner, first individually from 1940–1947 as one of the features in 92 issues of Police Comics and from 1944–1950 as 22 issues of The Spirit. The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. Despite the Spirit's origin as detective/criminologist Denny Colt, his real identity was rarely referred to after his first appearance, and for all intents and purposes he was simply "The Spirit". The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were oncecommon place in American culture. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed.
