While the character of Squee only saw four issues and was collected in “Squee’s Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors”, he was nominated for the 1998 Eisner Award.

Squee had his beginnings in Jhonen Vasquez’s comic “Johnny the Homicidal Maniac” which came out from Slave Labor Comics in 1995. Squee was Johnny’s phobia-inflicted neighbor. In 1997, when Johnny finished out his run, Squee began his own 4 issue series.

While Johnny the Homicidal Maniac was the embodiment of everything that made Vasquez angry; Squee embodied all his childhood fears. Squee aka Todd Casil is a quiet nervous boy who is bullied at school, neglected at home, and tortured in his subconscious.

School: His only friends are Pepito, who is the son of Satan and the anti-christ. Satan tries to recruit Squee into his satanic army to be his son’s friend but politely declines and remains Pepito’s friend anyways. Also his ratty old teddy bear Shmee, who acts like a trauma sponge and anything that Squee goes through, is absorbed by the teddy bear and comes to Squee in his dreams.

Home: Squee has been traumatized by almost every fear imaginable, including giant mutated bed bugs and demonic Chihuahuas. His father, whom works long hours, loathes his son and has told him on many occasions that he ruined his life. His mother doesn’t know who he is half the time because she’s usually hopped up on some pill and his grandfather is an insane cyborg who claims to keep healthy and young by devouring his children’s first borns and is always trying to eat Squee.

In the end, Squee is committed to the “Defective Head Meat Institute” as his father believes his son to be mentally unstable.

Jhonen Vasquez got his start in cartooning in high school when I friend kept insisting on drawing her more and more cartoons. He came up with “Happy Noodlehead Boy” which became a notable character later on in life. His biggest influence came when he started reading his older brother’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” comics. From there he started his work for Slave Labor Graphics an independent group and he also wrote, produced, and voiced the television cartoon “Space Invader Zim”; he has also produced music videos as well.
