If you are among the people who have been calling for a more colorful Spiderman in the past, here is some good news for you: the new incarnation of the web weaving hero will be a half-black, half-Hispanic character. The mixed teen’s name is Miles Morales, and he’s a good enough looking fellow. Whether he’ll be an awesome Spiderman—and an adequate portrayal of culture without being offensive or pandering—remains unknown.
Creators claim that Morales is not a publicity stunt but the new real deal. It’s about time that one of the biggest superheroes is any color other than white; now how about a black Superwoman, or an Asian Batman? Sure, we have plenty of diverse sub-heroes (particularly in the X-Men), but it’s time that a mega blockbuster hit comes out with someone other than a white guy in the starring role. Give the rest of the kids someone to look up to!
Marvel, if this is legit, thanks for taking our concerns to heart and creating a new character that more people can relate to. I’ve heard you’re going to be creating more females (along with using more female creators, too), so we’ll be eagerly awaiting those new heroines!
