I look forward to the beginning of the month for one reason… The publication of my favorite monthly comic books! For years I refused to read monthly comics because I hated waiting three or more months for a story arc to reach a conclusion. In 2004 a certain zombie comic showed me that some monthly releases are worth the wait. While I still prefer comic that are released each week, there are two monthly issued comic books that I will go out of my way to purchase and read.
The Boys
Imagine a world filled with chemically engineered superheroes who are owned by a company responsible for manufacturing weapons. Each superhero has a fabricated back story that hides their hedonistic behavior. The only thing standing between these heroes, the company that controls them, and the public are The Boys.
The Boys is a pretty extreme comic book that is not kid friendly. However, the storylines and character development make The Boys an intense read that is worth checking out. Simon Pegg fans in particular will get a kick out of the Dynamite Entertainment published comic.
The Walking Dead
The October 31, 2010 premiere of the television series based on the comic exposed the Walking Dead to an entirely new audience. I enjoy the television show (it was filmed in my part Georgia), but nothing compares to the first few issues of The Walking Dead comic book. The black and white comic book shows how something as major (and unexpected) as the zombie apocalypse can completely change how a person thinks and behaves. I am a fan of all things zombies, and The Walking Dead is one of my favorite comics because Robert Kirkman is constantly pushing the envelope and introducing plot twists that no one can anticipate.
Some people feel that monthly comic books are going to become a thing of the past, but I for one hope that is not true. Looking forward to each new month, and each new issue, is one thing that keeps this comic book fan going.
