There's something about the medium of comics that has made it fertile ground for melodrama. That's not to say literature in general isn't rife with the ridiculous, but looking at a single overwrought panel is much funnier than reading an entire paragraph of purple prose. Comics are more immediate in their delivery of emotion, especially when that emotion is absurd. Some of the world's best literature is in the realm of graphic novels, but not all comics have aged so well. Comically Vintage is a blog that hand-picks the worst (or best, depending on how you look at it) panels from the bygone era.
A lot of the humor of Comically Vintage comes from the dated gender roles going on inside those pages. Expectations for womanhood were pretty different back when comics were first gaining traction. It seems that scandalous women were a popular topic back then, as Comically Vintage features many of them in isolated moments of drama. They seduce men with their captivating beauty, betray their heartbroken lovers, and find themselves deeply in melodramatic love, all to our present amusement. Manly men engaging in acts of violence also pop up frequently. A comic book punch may have read as real violence back in the day, but in this age of action movies there's something inherently humorous about a villain being taken out by a yellow splash reading "POW!" The slang in the dialogue also reads as hilarious now. I'm sure exclamations like "holy cow!" and "jeepers!" were hip at the time, but oh how quickly language changes.
Comically Vintage has become popular enough that they've opened an online store where you can buy their favorite old-timey panels on t-shirts and mousepads, if you're into that sort of thing. I haven't owned a mousepad myself since 2008 but apparently there's still a market. You can also just browse through the blog's extensive archives; there's plenty of gems from the sillier days of comics.
