After Marvel Comics announced the upcoming publication in June 2011 I found myself counting the days until the official November 9, 2011 release date. With storylines written by Zeb Wells, I was sure Avenging Spider-Man would become one of my favorite monthly reads. Zeb Wells became one of my favorite comic writers when he wrote Venom: Dark Origin, the five part series that told the origin of The Symbiote and further explored the history of Eddie Brock.
Avenging Spider-Man picks up following the events of the last The Amazing Spider-Man issue with no major continuity issues. Though Spider-Man is featured in a team atmosphere with the Avengers, Avenging Spider-Man features him teaming up with a different superhero each month. I’ve always enjoyed Spider-Man’s dialogue with other characters. In fact, his quips (when he wasn’t morose) in Marvel Zombies made an already great comic book fantastic. The Well’s written dialogue in Avenging Spider-Man did not disappoint.
While the dialogue was wonderful, and the art on point, what I liked most about Avenging Spider-Man was the fact that it is an extremely new-reader friendly read. Most spin-offs or new release comic book revolving around an existing character require the reader to have a lot of background knowledge. New readers hoping to pick up the comic and start reading are in for an unpleasant surprise as they try to puzzle out character relationships, figure out the current storyline, and enjoy the issue in hand. Avenging Spider-Man is one comic that anyone can pick up and enjoy without reading the latest issues of Amazing Spider-Man.
